Orphan Sunday

This Sunday our church participated in Orphan Sunday with a service about Defending the Fatherless. We were able to hear personal stories from adopted children of all ages, adoptive parents, and adoptive parents in waiting, and were charged with the call to act rather than to simply become “aware.”

During the message based in Psalm 82, several passages were shared (surely not an exhaustive list) that demonstrates God’s love and promise of justice for the orphan and widow.

  • Ps. 68:5
  • Ps 10:14b
  • Deut. 10:18
  • Ps. 10:17-18
  • Ps. 146:9
  • 1 Sam. 2:8a
  • Rom. 4:5-8
Also, Exodus 22:22 was mentioned, and it deserves repeating:
22 “Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. 23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. 24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.  (NIV)
So, mess with the widows and orphans and die.
